How Much Dimension to Subtract for Edgebanding Tape Thickness

2026-03-09

Subtract the tape thickness on every edged side. A 18 mm finished door with 1 mm tape on both long edges is cut at 18 − 1 − 1 = 16 mm across that axis if the drawing’s 18 mm is the finished size. There is no single millimetre that fits every job — read the tape pack and the drawing.

The only formula that does not lie

Finished size = cut size + (tape thickness × number of edged sides on that axis).

So cut size = finished size − (tape thickness × edged sides).

Examples using the thickness printed on the roll (not a guess):

  • 0.4 mm PVC, two long edges: deduct 0.8 mm on the width.
  • 1 mm ABS, four-side door: deduct 2 mm on width and 2 mm on length.
  • 2 mm or 3 mm solid-wood strip: deduct that thickness per side. YongMao automatics publish 0.4–3 mm tape capacity — thicker lipping is a different process.

Watch-outs

  • Pre-mill removes a little substrate. If the miller is taking 0.5 mm a side, that is extra deduct or the finished door goes undersize. Measure a first article; do not copy a forum number.
  • 45° bevel / J-pull doors are not a simple two-side deduct. Use the FM series drawing, not the straight-line formula.
  • Plywood face grain and veneer tape swell with humidity. Lock one tape batch per kitchen.

If you are still choosing a machine, YM-368 covers standard straight furniture edges; bevel work is the FM series.
