How to Fix Edgebanding Drifting or Wandering Off-Track

2026-03-08

Tape that walks up or down is almost never “a bad machine”. It is coil tension, tape guide height, panel thickness vs tape width, infeed fence, or a dirty glue roller. Lock the mechanical centre of the tape on the panel edge before you replace a beam.

Fast checks (in this order)

  1. Coil: telescoping rolls feed at an angle. Use a brake / dancer that the manufacturer fitted.
  2. Tape width vs panel: published YongMao tape width is 12–65 mm on standard YM models, panel 10–60 mm (YM-468Z 15–80 mm). A 22 mm tape on an 18 mm panel must be centred — not “close”.
  3. Infeed fence parallel to the glue roller. A toe-in walks the panel.
  4. Top pressure even. One down roller light, one heavy, and the tape climbs.
  5. Glue roller contamination acts like a cam and shoves the tape each revolution.

What not to do

Do not crank feed to the next published step (15 → 18 → 23 m/min) to “outrun” the drift. Faster feed makes a bad guide worse.

If the tape is also peeling, you have a glue problem as well — see missing glue at the ends. For persistent faults after setup, use the repair page and send a video of the infeed, not only the finished door.
